KO'd in the 12th round

My personal vegan experiment ended after 12 days.  The main challenge for me was the social alienation that comes with being vegan.  Not only do people not get it (I don't 100% get it) and think you're weird (whatevs) but the camaraderie of eating together and trying dishes, etc. is missed.   I pretty much expected that and didn't sustain through the weekend.  Damn, that'd be a lot of effort!  So I did enjoy popovers, cheesecake, risotto, oh my.  But now I know a little more about being vegan than I did 12 days ago.  Learning's good, mmmmkay.

Last month I was visiting a friend and we were listening to a piece on NPR about vegetarianism/veganism. They had callers who had questions or tips or comments.  One dude called in with some tips on how to live vegan and he claimed he'd been vegan for 18 years and "it had never been difficult" for him.  Uhhh why ya lying to us bro?  Or do you just live on an isolated island that is an animal-product-free utopia where milk products don't sneak their way into your snacks and if so, can I come visit?  I was just surprised to hear that.  I reckon that if you're super passionate about being vegan that yes, it's easier to abide by.  But really, I think everyone experiences challenges in being vegan at some point or another.  Not just at holidays and celebrations and whatnot but in everyday life.  Lots to consider, definitely harder than just giving up cheese!

I did make a veggie meal one night and everyone ate it up which makes me happy.  It was a meatless loaf, grilled asparagus and zucchini, corn on the cob, salad (feta on the side) and bread from our neighbor (probs not vegan).  The loaf recipe came from the Magical Loaf Studio.  Have you seen this? Have you heard about this?  I've used it on several occasions, all successful.  No pics, unfortch.

On another note, did anyone else have like 4 nights of fireworks this year?  Not sure why (and I'm not complaining here) but there were fireworks going on Friday-Monday nights!  Also, not sure if it's just in the South but I am impressed with the caliber of firework one can buy at a corner stand.  My cousin, dad and brother put on a totally kick-ass show and they're already planning to top it next year.

I leave you with a photo from July 4th, last year, in New Zealand, vista from the drive up to Cardrona Alpine Resort.  Wishing Cardies n the Southern Hemisphere folks some good snow!

I'm enjoying the witty scribbles and delicious meals. The zoodles were fab. And those beautiful photos are inspiring. Thank you.

What I said was, when you were 14, "Amy, bacon? I thought you were a vegetarian?" You said, holding the rasher up for all to see, "It's not meat, it's fat!"
